If you've never heard of extreme ironing, the name alone probably raised an eyebrow. Is it a joke? Some elaborate meme? Naw, it's a real hobby, practiced by real people, and it's exactly as absurd, and as genuinely thrilling, as it sounds.

What Is Extreme Ironing?

Extreme ironing is the "sport" of taking an ironing board, an iron, and a shirt (or two) to the most inconvenient, remote, or dangerous locations imaginable... and ironing there. Practitioners have set up their boards on cliff faces, underwater, atop mountains, in whitewater rapids, while skydiving, and even on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The goal is always the same: combine the extreme outdoor adventure of activities like rock climbing or kayaking with the thoroughly mundane chore of pressing wrinkles out of laundry.

A Brief History

Extreme ironing was invented in 1997 by Phil Shaw, a factory worker from Leicester, England. As the story goes, Shaw came home from a long day at work to a pile of unironed laundry, and rather than choosing between chores and his beloved rock climbing, he decided to do both, dragging his ironing board out to a local crag. He dubbed his new pastime "Extreme Ironing" and began performing stunts for friends, eventually founding the "Extreme Ironing Bureau" to spread the word.

What started as a private joke quickly caught on and by the early 2000s, extreme ironing had spread across the UK and internationally, with clubs forming in Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. In 2002, dozens of ironists (yes, they've named themselves) even competed in the first Extreme Ironing World Championships in Germany's Munich forest, combining ironing technique with outdoor obstacle courses.

If you can ignore the terrible narration, this video has some great visual examples of the "sport:"

The Goal and Purpose

At its core, extreme ironing isn't really about laundry; it's about not taking yourself too seriously. The "sport" pokes fun at both extreme sports culture and domestic drudgery, wrapping the two into a single, delightfully ridiculous package. For many practitioners, it's as much performance art and comedy as it is athletic pursuit; the point is the photo or video of someone calmly pressing a shirt while dangling from a rope on a rock face.

That said, don't let the humor fool you. Genuine outdoor skills are often required. Ironing on the side of a cliff means practitioners still need real climbing, diving, or skiing experience to get to (and survive) their ironing spot safely. It's a hobby that rewards creativity, a good sense of humor, and a willingness to haul a folding ironing board somewhere it has no business being.
