Great Hobbies Don't Have to Be Expensive
The hobby industry loves to sell you gear. And sometimes, gear is genuinely helpful. But for most hobbies, the best first step is to try the thing before spending anything.
Here are hobbies with near-zero startup costs that you can genuinely start this weekend.
1. Urban Sketching (~$5 to start)
Buy a cheap sketchbook and a ballpoint pen. Go sit somewhere — a coffee shop, a park, a busy intersection — and draw what you see. That's it. No classes required, no expensive supplies.
2. Running (Free to start)
You already own shoes. Get outside. Start small — even 15 minutes of alternating walking and jogging counts. The Couch to 5K app is free and excellent.
3. Bird Watching (~$0)
Download the Merlin Bird ID app (free) and go for a walk. You'll start noticing birds you've walked past a hundred times. It escalates quickly.
4. Journaling (~$5)
Get a notebook. Write whatever comes out. There are no rules for personal journaling — it's a hobby that costs almost nothing and research consistently shows it improves mood and clarity.
5. Sourdough Bread Baking (~$10)
Flour, water, salt, and time. Sourdough starter is free (ask someone who bakes, or start your own from flour and water). The rest is following instructions and waiting.
6. Hiking (Free)

YouTube has more free music instruction than you could watch in a lifetime. If you have any instrument at home — guitar, keyboard, ukulele — open YouTube and start.

Learn to identify one edible plant in your area. Just one. Ramps in spring. Blackberries in summer. Mushrooms in fall (carefully, with a guide). There's a whole world of food growing in public places.
